Jemma Benjamin collapsed & died from sudden adult death syndrome (SADS) few minutes after her 1st kiss. She was 18 & dating a fellow university student Daniel Ross. This incident happened in 2009.
SADS is a rare heart condition.
“Sudden cardiac death is a dramatic and/or spontaneous death that is thought to be (and usually is) caused by a heart condition. In about 1 in every 20 cases of sudden cardiac death, no definite cause of death can be found, even after the heart has been examined by an expert cardiac pathologist. This is then called Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome. In the past it has also been called Sudden Adult Death Syndrome or Sudden Death Syndrome but, because it affects children too, the term Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome is now used. It is thought that cot death (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS) may be partly due to the same causes responsible for SADS.”
Daniel tried desperately to save Jemma . He was given CPR instructions on the phone. He even called her mom to inquire if Jemma was suffering from epilepsy. But Jemma had always been a healthy girl but she was stressed out about forthcoming exams.
A post mortem examination by pathologist Dr Jason Shannon could find no medical reason for her death in April 2009. The hearing was told she had no history of cardiac problems.
