Qamar David was serving a life sentence for blasphemy in Karachi jail & last night, he died in suspicious circumstances. Although they say he had a massive heart attack but in the past, he had been assaulted a number of times in prison. Naturally you can’t rule out that this could be another murder. Human rights activists are asking for an investigation that could ascertain the real cause of death.
Qamar David used to live in Lahore & he was a painter by profession. On 8 June 2006, he was reported by a business rival on false charges of blasphemy in accordance with Articles 295 and C of the Pakistan Penal Code. According to the plaintiff, he sent telephone messages with insulting words against Muhammad. Needless to say, this is invariably the story of anyone who is charged with blasphemy. Nobody wants to find out the facts, people just believe what one person says.
However, groups of Christian human rights activists are calling for the formation of a committee of inquiry to ascertain the reasons for the man’s death. They don’t buy the story of heart attack. In the meantime the family has set out for Karachi, to retrieve his body. David was in prison since the summer of 2006, and in these years in prison, had regularly suffered threats and beatings both from prison guards and fellow prisoners. A person who was constantly receiving threats cannot just die under mysterious conditions.
If people like Salman Taseer & Shahbaz Bhatti can be killed, what can you expect of one who is in jail, thanks to the abuse of that particular law. Various dailies have been covering stories on it but these are mere stories. Justice is beyond the reach of common man. You know Qamar David happens to be just another name in the list. It’s only the case of a sad statistic. You call it a story or a number, it’s up to you.
