Church and Organizations Slam Dominican Republic Transvestite Beauty Pageant

SANTIAGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC — Representatives of religious congregations and community leaders of the northern Dominican city of Santiago expressed their rejection of the transvestite beauty pageant to be held on Sunday.

The pastor of the Evangelical Church of Santiago, Isaias Gomez, and the speaker of the Catholic assembly, Eliseo Nuñez, agreed Friday that putting on a show like that is unequivocal proof of Dominican society’s loss of values.

Meanwhile the president of the Union of Neighborhood Associations of Santiago’s south side, Alberto Peña, called on the authorities to stop the pageant because it offends against society’s moral principles and sends the wrong message to young people.

“It doesn’t matter that the event is held in an enclosed space, the fact that it is being held at all is reprehensible,” Peña said.

Santiago provincial Gov. Jose Izquierdo, who in principle said he would ban the pageant, changed his mind and said that the organizers can continue with their plans on the condition that the event is held in an enclosed space and minors are not allowed to attend.

The organizer of the beauty contest and owner of the entertainment center where it will be held, Denis Gonzalez, said that everything is ready for the show and tickets are already sold out.

At the same time, he said that he doesn’t understand why a beauty pageant for transvestites has caused such a scandal that it has even been reported in the international press.

He also claimed that the rejection of the contest is part of the prejudices and taboos prevalent in Dominican society.
